If you’ve been following the women in space tumblr (like I told you to) then you’ll know today marks fifty years since Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space.

This is the first time I’ve really used my cel paints for months. The LNWC film was pretty much digitally-made and the background painting style for “Song of the sea” is very loose watercolour with a lot of digital compositing. It’s been ages since I did a painting that just had to be a finished painting and I can’t believe how rusty I’ve become. Anyway, this is one of two paintings I did today and I’ve a few more planned all on the same theme.

No surprises.

Hello internet friends. The midnight toils of Late Night Work Club are slowly winding down, and Project #1 is nearly finished. Months of work, thousands of hours, enough caffeine (among other things) to kill a dozen large animals dead and some of the raddest animators making the raddest stuff. It wouldn’t be a true indie project if we weren’t running a few weeks behind, so stay tuned for more info in the very near future for release dates, possible screenings in your local megacity, and purchase info for those of you so inclined to support what we are doing. Light Grey Excitement

The Light Grey Art Lab is an art gallery in Minnesota that works in an unusually brilliant way. On their blog they announce a theme for a planned exhibition and people apply to be part of it through the comments section, then LGAL chooses who’ll be in the show. The shows are mostly-print based and then, for those of us who aren’t Minnesotan, some prints are made available online IN THEIR SHOP.

So, exciting news for me.. I’m part of two upcoming shows!

First (with a looming deadline) is STATION ZERO. The concept here is that the artists taking part get sent an old sci-fi novel and have to design a poster for it. You can read more about it on the blog post HERE

I was hoping I’d get something with hardly any text because I’m not that comfortable with it. Then this thing arrived

Still, there are wordier books in the bunch so I feel pretty lucky. But what a cover! I was so happy when it arrived. I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. I’ve been reading it and it turns out that my book is actually two stories, one titled “The Lord of Death” and the other “The Queen of Life”. The Lord and Queen in question never actually meet, sadly. And, in case you’re wondering, the monstrosity on the cover is not the queen of life. Reading stories about space exploration and alien races written in 1919 is so fascinating, but this is going to be a long blog post anyway so I won’t go into that here. I’ll post up a couple of things on my twitter in a minute.

The second show I’m part of has just been announced HERE.
I’m a Mage and Louise is a Ranger and I’m reeeally looking forward to sketching my face off for it.

That’s my light grey news for now. Hopefully I’ll have some nice WIP stuff to upload here as I go.

Hello. I am the director/animator guy of Toh Kay’s With Any Sort Of Certainty video. You may have seen it. In fact, 55+k of you did in the first 48 hours. That is until the fine folks at (asshat record label) issued a takedown complaint to Youtube and Vimeo, for Tomas’ own original song and my own original animation. They took it off of my Vimeo account. That felt… weird. At this point, (asshat record label) is working their hardest to make sure the video goes away, possibly for good. The issues between Tomas and (asshat record label) go back through many acrimonious years, and I just happened to have my own work dragged into it by a record label trying to prove a point. They have lawyers. I do not. So I can’t fight them and it may take a long time for it to get ironed out enough that I can repost it again.

I worked very hard on this video. It means a lot to me. And I was so pleased and gratified to know that it meant a lot to some of you who saw it. Thanks so much for your emails and stuff. You guys are great. Both Tomas and I will have the video on our sites, but who knows how long that will last. And we both want as many people to see/hear it as possible, and to have it readily available for new people to see and hopefully connect with and enjoy.

And so, here is a download link for the full 1920x1080 video. It should be good for about 2 weeks. Enjoy it. Upload it anywhere and everywhere. Remix it. Torrent it. Blog it. Tumblr it. Tweet it. Steal it. Give it. Um… print it out and post it on walls? I don’t know. Whatever the spirit moves you to do.

Neither of us want to see this thing we’ve worked on go away. You can’t ever really erase something from the internet, especially music and art. It just gets out there, that’s what’s so great about it. It lasts. And with your help it should only be a quick and easy Google search away from anyone who wants to see it.
